Texas Woman Sues Mexican Resort for Hot Tub Electrocution That Killed Husband

Wife, critically injured trying to save him, seeks justice for her own injuries

EL PASO, Texas, June 14, 2024 – Attorneys at Paranjpe Mahadass Ruemke LLP, or PMR Law, have filed a lawsuit in the case of a Texas man who was electrocuted and died while using a hot tub at a Mexican resort. The incident also left his wife critically injured.

“Hotels and resorts have a duty to ensure guest safety. At no point did resort staff think to engage an emergency shut-off, not to mention warn guests of a faulty, dangerous amenity.”

“There is no reason this should have happened,” said Houston trial lawyer Tej Paranjpe. “Hotels and resorts have a duty to ensure guest safety. At no point did resort staff think to engage an emergency shut-off, not to mention warn guests of a faulty, dangerous amenity.”

Lizzette Zambrano and her husband Jorge Guillen, of El Paso, were visiting the Sonoran Sea Resort in western Mexico near the Gulf of California earlier this week when, according to the lawsuit, they were electrocuted upon entering the on-site hot tub.

The lawsuit describes the horrific details in which Mr. Guillen entered the hot tub first, was immediately exposed to an electrical current and taken underwater. Witnessing her husband’s collapse, Ms. Zambrano raced to help but, according to the filing, she was also electrocuted and fell into the water with him.

As other patrons swarmed to assist the couple, many also received electrical shocks when attempting to pull them from the water. Ms. Zambrano was revived, but it was only after approximately 10 painstaking minutes that resort staff finally arrived and began to assist in the rescue and retrieve Mr. Guillen, according to the lawsuit.

A video shared on social media showed the aftermath of the deadly incident, with people seen huddled around the hot tub and running for help.

The General Prosecutor’s Office of Justice of the State of Sonora says the cause of the electrical discharge is under investigation. After the accident, Ms. Zambrano was taken by helicopter to a Phoenix-area hospital, where she remains in critical condition. Mr. Guillen was pronounced dead on scene.

The case is Lizzette Zambrano et al. v. Casago, LLC, et al. Cause no. 2024DCV2838 in El Paso County. Ms. Zambrano is represented by Tej Paranjpe and Michael Rodriguez of PMR Law and Charles Bush from Bush & Bush Law Group.
