There is a moment in Rhodes when the medieval city seems to turn entirely golden. The limestone walls absorb the last warm rays of sunshine, narrow streets begin to cool, and visitors settle into cafés and tavernas. It is one of the loveliest times to experience Rhodes, also known as Rhodos.
The photograph captures that moment at Hippocrates Square in the medieval Old Town. The red dome to the left, the imposing stone Castellania with its arched entrance and exterior staircase, and visitors sitting on ancient steps make a wonderfully relaxed scene. Centuries of history are present, but this is also a living city.
Begin about an hour before sunset. Walk past the Palace of the Grand Master and along the Street of the Knights, then follow Socrates Street toward Hippocrates Square. Take time to notice wooden windows, carved doorways and quiet courtyards. The warm evening light makes the stone architecture especially photogenic.
Stop at Hippocrates Square for coffee, a cold drink or local wine and enjoy the people-watching. The Castellania staircase and surrounding cafés give the square its distinctive atmosphere. A rooftop terrace overlooking the square is another option for lingering over the last light.
For a seaside interlude, head toward Mandraki Harbour. Its medieval windmills, Fort of Saint Nicholas, yachts and waterfront promenade make an excellent sunset walk. Afterwards, return through the Sea Gate for dinner in the Old Town.
Choose a taverna in one of the smaller lanes and make dinner unhurried. Grilled fish, Greek salad, tzatziki and Rhodian pitaroudia, crisp chickpea fritters, are all worth considering. Afterward, wander again as the lanterns come on and the Old Town takes on a different personality.
Photographers should stay through blue hour. Warm limestone, illuminated arches and the deepening sky offer changing compositions, from wide architectural scenes to small details of everyday life. Wear comfortable shoes: the historic paving is uneven and can be slippery.
A perfect evening in Rhodes needs little planning. A slow walk, a beautiful sunset, good food and time to absorb the atmosphere are more than enough. The golden hour passes quickly, but the pleasure of wandering these streets can last well into the night.
